A Note from the Delivery Guy Made Me Install Security Cameras around My House – I Will Forever Be Grateful to Him
A quick scribble on a delivery bag sent me racing to my backyard, where I made a chilling discovery. The cryptic note from Ravi, our regular delivery driver, might have just saved my family from something terrifying, but it was clear that the danger was still looming.
As a single mom, I often relied on food delivery when the exhaustion of life with my kids, Kai and Isla, became overwhelming. Ravi had been delivering to us for a while, and over time, he became more than just a familiar face. He exchanged high-fives with my kids and always made time for a friendly chat. But last Tuesday, something about his usual visit felt off.
Ravi appeared tense, his usual upbeat demeanor replaced by something darker. He handed me the food without a word, hurrying back to his car, leaving me more than a little confused.
“What’s wrong with Ravi?” Kai asked, peering through the window.
“I don’t know, buddy,” I replied, watching as his car sped off. “Maybe he’s just in a rush.”
I set the food on the kitchen counter, but a nagging feeling persisted. As I was getting everything ready, I noticed something strange on the back of the delivery bag—Ravi had scribbled a note in shaky handwriting.
“CHECK YOUR TRASH CAN.”
My heart dropped. “Why don’t you two wash up while I get dinner ready?” I said, trying to keep my voice calm. I ushered them out of the kitchen, then rushed to the backyard.
Ravi’s message echoed in my head as I reached the trash cans. My hands shook as I opened the first one—nothing unusual, just our usual trash. But the second can… that’s where my stomach dropped.
Wrapped in an old blanket was a collection of gloves, a few small tools, and an unlabeled bottle filled with a strange liquid. Panic surged through me, my heart pounding in my chest.
“Mom? Are you okay?” Isla’s voice broke through my thoughts.
I quickly closed the lid and turned to her, forcing a smile. “I’m fine, sweetie. Just checking something. Go inside; I’ll be right there.”
Once I had sent Isla back inside, I immediately called the sheriff’s office.
“Sheriff’s Department, this is Leona speaking.”
“Leona, it’s Nora. I need you to come over immediately. I found something in my trash that doesn’t feel right,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
Leona’s voice turned serious. “Stay inside with the kids. Don’t touch anything. I’m on my way.”
I hung up, my nerves on edge. Recent break-ins in the neighborhood had been strangely coordinated—locks weakened with chemicals, and the evidence was always meticulously cleaned up. A chilling thought crossed my mind: was my house next?
“Mom, what’s going on?” Kai asked, noticing my unease.
“Everything’s fine,” I reassured him, my voice strained. “Let’s just eat dinner.”
Just as we sat down to eat, there was a knock at the door. I felt my pulse race, but relief washed over me when I saw Leona standing outside.
“Kids, stay here and finish dinner,” I said, stepping outside to talk with her.
I explained everything to Leona—Ravi’s note, his strange behavior, and the disturbing contents of the trash. She listened carefully, scanning the area before speaking.
“You did the right thing by calling me,” she said. “I’ll take a look at what you found and get it analyzed. In the meantime, I suggest you increase your security. We’ll be patrolling the area tonight.”
Sleep was nearly impossible that night. I spent hours researching security systems and jumping at every sound I heard. By morning, I was running on caffeine and barely any sleep.
At 8 a.m., I called a security company.
“I need cameras installed around my house today,” I said, urgency in my voice.
“Ma’am, our earliest slot is next week—”
“No,” I interrupted. “Someone’s planning to break into my house. I need those cameras now.”
There was a brief silence before the receptionist softened. “Let me see what I can do. Can you hold for a moment?”
After an agonizing wait, she came back with good news. “We had a cancellation. Our team can be there in two hours.”
The security team arrived, and I paced the house as they installed cameras. Every passing car and every dog walker seemed suspicious. As they finished, Leona pulled into the driveway with a grim expression.
“Nora, we need to talk inside,” she said.
I sent the kids to their rooms before sitting down with her. “The lab results are in,” she said. “The liquid you found? It’s a corrosive chemical, commonly used to weaken locks.”
My stomach twisted. “So, it’s true. They were planning to break in.”
“Looks that way,” Leona confirmed. “But you’ve done everything right. We’re increasing patrols, and your security system is in place.”
I caught sight of Ravi arriving at a neighbor’s house. “He’s here,” I said, walking toward the window.
“Talk to him, but be careful,” Leona cautioned. “We’re not sure if he’s involved or just a concerned bystander.”
I approached Ravi as he was about to leave. He looked tense, but I needed answers.
“I’m sorry about yesterday,” he said before I could speak. “I saw some guys messing with your trash. They seemed shady. I wanted to warn you, but I didn’t know if they were still around.”
A wave of relief washed over me. “So that’s why you left the note?”
He nodded. “I’m sorry if I scared you.”
“Ravi, you may have just saved my family. Thank you,” I said, my voice thick with emotion.
That night, after tucking my kids into bed, I sat in front of the new security monitors. The cameras showed quiet streets and empty yards, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was out there, waiting for their chance.
Whatever came next, I knew I wasn’t alone. Ravi’s quick thinking, Leona’s dedication, and my own determination had turned a potential disaster into a story of vigilance and unexpected allies. Now, all I could do was stay alert and keep my family safe.
