A wish list written by an Oklahoma foster kid
Dreamcatchers for Abused Children, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to assisting children who’ve suffered abuse in finding a path to recovery. As stated on their website, their primary mission is “educating the public on all aspects of child abuse such as symptoms, intervention, prevention, statistics, reporting, and helping victims locate the proper resources necessary to achieve a full recovery.”
Recently, the organization unveiled a poignant list compiled by a young boy from Oklahoma. This child, placed into foster care after enduring horrific abuse at the hands of his alcoholic parents, had never experienced the simple joys of childhood or the warmth of love. His life had been marred by neglect and hunger.
A concerned neighbor, after years of witnessing the boy’s dire living conditions, finally reached out to social services. Following the intervention by authorities, Dreamcatchers for Abused Children stepped in and found a nurturing new home for the child.
Upon learning that a loving family had been found for him, the young boy made a heartfelt list of everything he hoped to find in his new home. The simplicity and earnestness of his desires moved many who saw it. Most of the items on his list were basic necessities, highlighting a poignant reality—that every child deserves to dream beyond mere survival.
Here is his list in full:
- In my family, the essentials I wish for are food and water.
- Keep distance from me.
- A home with running water and electricity.
- I yearn for love.
- Parents who do not quarrel.
- Please, no medications.
- Spare my dogs.
- Assistance with my studies.
- Clean clothing.
- No lice or pests in the house.
- Dust and vacuum.
- Use covers to clean the bed.
- I don’t want my toys to be sold.
- Fair treatment.
- No drinking alcohol.
- A television in the home.
- School supplies that are mine.
- Really cool shoes.
- Personal comb and soap.
- A cozy home with a secure environment and a warm coat.
- I need a toothbrush.
This list serves as a humbling reminder to always be grateful for what we have.
